Preparing for School Program
St Ives Primary School provides two programs to assist new students commencing in
either Kindergarten or Young Starters (Kindergarten for younger students).
A parents' orientation session is held early in Term 4. This in provides a detailed overview
of life at St Ives Primary School for students and their families.
Sessions for children and parents follow this, for several weeks during Term 4.
New students have the chance to "practice" coming to school
and to become familiar with their new school environment. Children will visit
their classroom, toilets, playground, library, computer lab, canteen and other
facilities. They will spend time with the current Kindergarten class and
teachers and meet other children who will be starting school with them. This
all helps children to know what to expect on their first day and takes away
much of the "unknown".
Each new Kindergarten and Young Starter student is allocated a Year 5 or 6 student to become their
"buddy". Over the first few weeks of school life these senior buddies provide
support and guidance to the new students.
New Kindergarten children will meet their buddies at orientation and are welcomed by them on their
first day of school.
